Videos and Article response Module 2

1.)Aesthetics: Philosophy of the Arts video main points:

Aesthetics is the philosophical study of beauty and art

theory of musics' effect on body and will was an important contribution on aesthetics.

Plato brings to the art world, the idea of beauty.

Hutcheson believed the human being has sense of beauty and harmony.  The perception is from an inner sense that registers with an outer sense.  The inner sense is thought of by him as innate and spontaneous.

Part of us has to be oblivious to what is happening to enjoy art.  We need to forget about other things to focus on the art of something.

CARTA: Evolutionary Origins of Art and Aesthetics: Neurobiology, Neurology and Art and Aesthetics

Changeux:
Symmetry of our human bodies themselves help contribute to the origins of art.

Ramachandran:
Science and art meet in the human brain
the point of art is to deliberately exaggerated the image in some way to produce pleasing effects on the brain
universal principals that cut across culture in art.

Article points:

There are universal key things that we all believe are beautiful, symmetry is one of these.
Exaggerations of what we believe are beautiful become more pleasing to us.
The brain responds strongly to what we see and know in nature.
It is our brains that are able to make sense of the art examples: black outlines of items.

2.) I believe Plato had the most important role in aesthetics with his idea of beauty.  Plato the Greek philosopher from 428BC.  Plato brings to attention that art is copying to convey the beauty in an object.        Plato considers art as something that furthers you from the truth.  Although this sounds bad at first the truth here is that Plato was able to identify what other philosophers came up with decades later.  The idea that you have to let part of yourself go to enjoy the aesthetics of art.  One cannot appreciate literal art they need to invest some imagination into it.  I chose Plato because he began to turn the wheels in thoughts on art.  He had many ground breaking theories that apply to art and aesthetics today.

3.) Changeux and Ramachandran spoke about the brain and art.  They both made me realize many theories of art and our bodies and brains that I would not have originally linked.  Both scientists spoke of symmetry and how we all universally find it appealing.  Perhaps we enjoy symmetry because all animals we know are symmetrical.  Also both went on to speak about the perception of what we already love in a hyperbole is what we look for as beauty in art.  I enjoyed these lectures for the fact that they made sense to me combining science and art.

4.) The videos and article relate to the reading by acknowledging the history of art and explaining why we may perceive art the way that we do.  Symmetry was brought up multiple times in each of the texts and videos.  As all went on the idea that asethetics comes from nature and copies of it is prevalent.

5.) The films and the article were interesting to say the least.  Each source gave a further understanding of different takes on aesthetics.  The first video helped enhance my information from reading the text about the history of aesthetics and art.  while the scientific lecturers helped me understand why the art appeals to us in the way that it does.
